Just for Laughs: ‘Sorry for the inconvenience’, working with PdA to ease delays at ticket counter

Update from PdA July 30:

“Place des Arts constantly strives to offer top quality service for its various clienteles. Certain problems that arose at the box office on the evening of July 24 were quickly resolved in collaboration with Just for Laughs. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Update July 26: Just for Laughs replied, saying this:

“We’re very sorry for the inconvenience caused by the long lineups last night [July 24] at Place des Arts. We are aware of the problem and doing our best to work with Place des Arts to ensure that this doesn’t happen again, and we would encourage people to arrive early when picking up their tickets.”

July 25: Gazette columnist Bill Brownstein, city editor Michelle Richardson and I reviewed the first (7 p.m.) English-language gala on Wednesday, July 24, which was hosted by  Dane Cook.

Richardson and I both complained about latecomers to the gala, which is a perennial problem, but was more pronounced than usual for this first gala. Reader Martha Allman sent us this commentary, saying the blame should go to Place des Arts. I have passed this along to both Just for Laughs (see above) and Place des Arts and will add their comments when I get them.

Here is what Ms. Allmann wrote in her email to us Thursday.

Denise, Michelle,

Both of you made reference to people showing up late for the show. With all due respect the story should have been about the Place des Arts total disarray at the ticket counter. Obviously neither of you had to wait in the line from hell.

Apparently there were 5 shows last night. I did not attend the gala, but went to the New Comics one in the small hall. I arrived at 6:35 to pick up my “will call” tickets, fully expecting to be seated leisurely when my show began. We waited over 25 minutes in line. It was an organizers nightmare. People were freaking out, etc, etc. To add insult to injury, your readers were subjected to your comments in today’s paper. Sheesh, I’ll bet you didn’t even realize.

I ran into my seats moments before our 7pm show started. There were still dozens and dozens of people in line waiting to pick up their tickets.

Frankly, I was appalled and it will alter my attendance at JFL (or that is what I say today, but I love it so will continue to go). I am going to another show on Saturday at Place des Arts. I intend to be there an hour before the show.

Perhaps you can take a bit of paper space to advise your readers to show up ultra early.

Enjoy the festival! This must be a really hard part of your job!

Cheers

Martha Allman
